Tell the shop exactly where you are
The Thruway has small green mile marker signs about every tenth of a mile. Give the number on the nearest one and your direction. "Westbound, just past Exit 31" is good; the mile marker number plus "westbound" is better. If you are on a ramp, say which exit and which ramp.
Thruway rules worth knowing
The New York State Thruway Authority controls towing on the Thruway itself, and in some cases the State Police will send the authorized tow company for that section. Repairs on the shoulder and tows once the truck is off the Thruway can be handled by the shop. If a trooper is already on scene, follow their instructions first.
Winter on this stretch
Lake effect snow off Lake Ontario can turn the Thruway between Utica and Syracuse white fast. Keep fuel above a quarter tank, carry winter blend fuel or an anti-gel additive, and drain the air tanks if your truck does not have an automatic drain. Gelled fuel and frozen air lines are two of the most common winter road calls around here.
